I had the esteemed honor of sitting down with one of the most celebrated wedding photographers in the industry, Jose Villa. Known for his fine-art approach to photography, Jose has captured some of the most breathtaking weddings around the world, with his work gracing the pages of top magazines like, Vogue, Harpers BAZAAR, Town & Country, Forbes, Martha Stewart Magazine, Instyle Weddings, BRIDES, and more—inspiring couples and event professionals alike.
In this interview, we dive into his creative process, his approach to capturing unforgettable moments, and some invaluable advice for couples preparing for their big day.
- How did you get started in this field?
I started shooting weddings and events after graduating from the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California at 20 years old.
- How do you adjust your approach to meet the unique preferences and vision of each couple you work with?
Well, I am a fine art wedding photographer. My approach applies fine art photography to the living, breathing, fast-moving phenomenon that is a wedding. For me, it is all about making something beautiful. Ultimately, my goal is to craft vibrant, energetic, fine art images that are as unique as the people in the photographs. Each client, destination, venue, and theme are all different. Listening to the clients about their style and vision, and spending time to prepare with the planner in regards to event timelines and shot lists are both incredibly important. Communication is key.
- How do you ensure that the personalities of the couple shine through in the photos you capture? What advice do you have for couples who may feel nervous or uncomfortable in front of the camera?
If we haven’t already spent time together during an engagement session in many of the weddings I shoot, there are several events spanning multiple days. By the wedding day, the couple has had time to get familiar with the photo and video team and they are more relaxed. I like to make my couples laugh because it makes a big difference in their body language and it shows in the photos. As far as wedding day jitters, I encourage couples to carve out time to sneak away and relax a bit before or after the ceremony. I remind them that this special day is going to go by very fast and to enjoy each moment. And above all else—relax and have a glass of champagne!
- How do you handle family dynamics and ensure that group photos run smoothly and efficiently?
For family photos, it is important to know beforehand who the key people who should be photographed are. This ensures that everyone is documented and no one is forgotten. This is a critical piece of information to receive from the planner during pre-wedding meetings. And most importantly: A guest should never have to wait or ask for the photographer! If they want a photo, take it.
- How do you deal with working with videography teams?
Both the photo and the video teams need to capture the important moments of the event. It is very important that we have respect for each other and work together. Keeping the lines of communication open, especially before the event, ensures that both teams can do their jobs well. We often meet to connect about lighting and sound to make sure that each team can thrive. For example, during white shots (the time when the event space is ready but before guests have arrived) we use bright lights so that the decor really shines. This may or may not have an adverse effect on the video, so it is important to discuss this upfront.
- How do you feel about this new trend of wedding content creators?
Today, most vendors, planners, and even couples want to bring a content creator along to shoot behind-the-scenes footage or even the wedding itself. It is important to limit the number of content creators so that it doesn’t hinder the important shots the photographers need to take. Discussing details like these beforehand ensures that everyone’s expectations are met.
- What aspects of Alejandra Poupel’s planning and coordination style do you find most beneficial in ensuring a smooth and successful wedding day?
What I love about working with Alejandra Poupel Events is that Alejandra is very cool under pressure—always smiling and communicating. Inevitable events happen, that is the nature of weddings, but when they do, Alejandra always communicates the shift and remains professional.
From his artistic vision to the genuine connections he forms with his couples, it’s clear why his work has become a benchmark in luxury wedding photography. I hope his tips and insights spark inspiration and confidence in your own journey.
A huge thank you to Jose for sharing his expertise with us—we can’t wait to see the magic he creates next!
