I know it is hard, but you have to admit it… Summer is over. And so is the indian summer that we had in September. Welcome winter ! 

To cheer you up, there is a thousand reasons to be delighted with winter time, among which enjoying toasted chestnuts, a cosy evening nearby the fireplace, waking up on a snowy day, and… getting married ! After all, who said weddings had to take place only in summer ?

First of all, an undoubtable benefit of getting married in Winter is the lack of stress about the elements since they typically take place inside. The risk of rain and wind can make the planning period extremely stressful and potentially costly if you need to add a tent. Further more, most locations and vendors book up quickly during the summer months at a high rate, whereas those same locations and vendors are available for a lower price during the colder months. They will also be able to focus more of their attention on your big day.

To give you some inspiration, here is my selection of ideas that will help you make your wedding a wonderful and memorable winterday.

For the location, you will be spoilt for choice ! No need to introduce Aspen, the Colorado‘s most known ski resort. In Europe, Switzerland offers beautiful places such as Gstaad, Verbier, or Saint-Moritz. France and Italy share the montainous massif of the Alps : French or Italian side, it’s up to you ! You’ve probably ever heard about Courchevel or Megève, haven’t you ?

For the aisle, a pathway made of candles in lanterns, leading to a fireplace brings the perfect warm and cosy touch.

As for the drinks part, a winter cocktail calls for warm, and comforting drinks. And what comes instantly in our minds when we hear those words is hot chocolate, isn’t it ?

If you want to play the audacity, you can’t go wrong with hot chocolate and warm apple cider, but why not take every opportunity to add an element of surprise?

Then, serve up white hot chocolate in small espresso cups and eggnog in small glasses for your guests as they arrive. At the bar, offer saketinis (Japanese rice wine and sweet-flavored vodka) in glasses rimmed with sugar crystals, or warm wine, that perfectly matches with the winter and christmas spirit. Serve it with a thin orange slice, and a stick of cinnamon.

 

To warm up the tables, golden candles are a good choice and guarantee a romantic atmosphere. With glitters, to add a bit of magic to the night !

Light garlands are an excellent alternative to candles, for the same visual effect.

I recommend you not to skimp on the centerpieces. They fill the space on your tables, and are part of the set. Because it’s wintertime does not mean that you can’t have flowers. Like the pictures below, roses marry marvelously with branches. Wood and flowers, perfect match !

Last but not least, the dress. You remain free to choose any dress that you like, but you might need to cover your shoulders and your bridemaides’ with an elegant fur coat or stole.

My last advice would be to provide for many many warm and comfortable plaids (mohair is great!) in case your guests feel a bit cold. You don’t want them to get sick for the most important day of your life.
